See the area where Lisbon first expanded

Starting next to statue of King Pedro IV in the center of the Rossio, the oldest square in Lisbon, we walk up the hills on the western side of the Baixa. This is the area where Lisbon expanded early in its history. Its three major areas – Chiado, Bairro Alto and Carmo – continued to develop their identities over the centuries. In the 19 th and early 20 th centuries the Chiado became a center of Portuguese culture and a gathering point for artists, poets and authors and today is an area of theaters, museums and bookstores. It was also a high-class shopping area, an identity it still has. West of the Chiado is the Bairro Alto, a residential area outside the 14 th-century city walls. Today it has a number of restaurants, Fado houses, bars and antique shops. The Carmo area is best known for its important role as the location where the government surrendered during the revolution of April 25, 1974. Our tour ends in the Largo do Carmo, from where you can easily reach tie area museums and the Rossio-Baixa area.

Começando junto à estátua de D. Pedro IV no centro do Rossio, a praça mais antiga de Lisboa, subiremos às colinas a poente da Baixa. Esta é a área para onde Lisboa primeira se expandiu, sub-dividindo-se em bairros, do Chiado, Bairro Alto e Carmo que, desenvolveram as suas próprias identidades ao longo dos séculos. No século XIX e início do século XX o Chiado tornou-se o centro da cultura portuguesa e local de tertúlia para artistas, poetas e prosadores. Hoje em dia encerra em si teatros, museus e livrarias. Também foi uma área comercial da classe alta, característica que ainda hoje o define. A oeste do Chiado encontra-se o Bairro Alto, uma área residencial extra-muros construídos no século XIV. Agora encontramos aqui restaurantes, casas de fado, bares e lojas de antiguidades. O Carmo é mais conhecido pelo importante papel que desempenhou como palco da rendição do governo durante a revolução de 25 de Abril de 1974. O nosso percurso termina no Largo do Carmo onde poderá facilmente aceder aos museus que se encontram nesta área, assim como chegar ao Rossio e à Baixa.

Rendez-vous près de la statue de Dom Pedro IV au centre du Rossio, pour gravir les collines situées à l’ouest de la ville basse ou Baixa. Lisbonne a commencé par se développer dans cette zone, divisée par la suite en trois quartiers (Chiado, Bairro Alto et Carmo) qui ont su affirmer leurs identités au long des siècles. Au XIXème siècle et au début du XXème, le Chiado est devenu le centre de la culture portugaise, rendez-vous des artistes, des poètes et des écrivains. Il abrite aujourd’hui des théâtres, des musées et des librairies, mais aussi des commerces de luxe. À l’ouest du Chiado, se trouve le Bairro Alto, un quartier résidentiel extramuros construit au XIVème siècle où abondent aujourd’hui les restaurants, les maisons de fado, les cafés et les magasins d’antiquités. Le Carmo est plus connu pour son rôle crucial pendant la révolution de 1974. La promenade se termine au Largo do Carmo d’où vous pourrez facilement accéder aux musées du quartier, ou bien redescendre jusqu’au Rossio et à la Baixa.

Wir beginnen vor der Statue vom König D. Pedro IV, im Herzen vom Rossio, ältester Platz Lissabons und besteigen dann die Hügel Lissabons. Lissabon ist in westlicher Richtung gewachsen und teilt sich in Viertel wie Chiado, Bairro Alto und Carmo auf. Im Lauf der Jahrhunderte haben diese Viertel ihre eigene Identität entwickelt. Im 19. Jahrhundert und anfangs des 20. Jahrhunderts ist der Chiado zum Zentrum der portugiesischen Kultur geworden und auch beliebter Begegnungsort für Künstler, Dichter und Schriftsteller. Heuzutage sind im Chiado Viertel, Theater, Museen und Büchereien zu finden. Es war früher ein beliebtes Einkaufsviertel der reichen Bürger Lissabons, was heute auch noch zutrifft. Östlich vom Chiado befindet sich das Bairro Alto Viertel, eine Wohngegend, die im 16. Jahrhundert entstand und außerhalb der Stadtmauern lag. Heute ist dieses Viertel für seine Restaurants, Fadolokale, Bars und Antiquitätenläden bekannt. Unser Spaziergang endet am Carmo Platz. Von hier aus erreichen Sie leicht die Museen, die sich in der Gegend befinden. Vom Carmo Viertel kommt man rasch zum Rossio Platz und zur Unterstadt.
